IDs for an Inclusive Democracy Act

The IDForID Act establishes a free federal ID for all Americans. This groundbreaking new law will allow the over 21 million American adults without ID to access the means to attain jobs, housing, medical care, and more. It represents a fundamental shift in access and opportunity for the most vulnerable Americans.

Why Free ID?

11% (over 21 million) of American adults do not have government-issued photo ID. 

The federal ID will allow Americans to:

  • obtain employment

  • sign a lease or buy a home

  • open a bank account

  • access VA benefits 

  • access WIC, SNAP, and other federal programs

  • access drug rehabilitation services

  • visit an urgent care clinic

Americans without ID are more likely to:

  • Become or remain unhoused

  • Cycle between homelessness and incarceration

  • Be poor, black or brown, seniors, or very young

  • Become a financial burden on taxpayers due to reliance on public services, incarceration, emergency room visits due to a lack of access to preventative care, etc.

  • Be unable to receive basic health care
